Bucharest International Student Model United Nations Conference 2017 is an academic simulation of several bodies of the United Nations and the North Atlantic Council, held in English and organized by the UN Youth Association of Romania.
UN committees simulations, known as "Model United Nations" have a long tradition in numerous prestigious universities across the globe, being recognized as important forums for debate due to their ability to provide viable solutions to current issues on the international agenda, but also due to their ability to provide alternative answers to difficult historical situations within the global political arena.
Since the first academic simulation of decision-making in the United Nations, held in 1952 at Harvard University, the phenomenon of "MUN" has expanded globally and attracts an increasing number of students, particularly in the fields of political science, international relations, diplomacy, law, economics, cultural studies, etc.
In Romania, as in most East European states, such Model United Nations conferences have become popular during the last decade. Therefore, the BISMUN Conference became the main national simulation of its kind, currently being at its ninth edition.
The Theme – “Multiculturalism in the United Nations – Accepting Differences for the Common Good”
“Compromise” is the key word for next year’s edition of Bucharest Student Model United Nations. Having as general theme “Multiculturalism in the United Nations - Accepting Differences for the Common Good”, the event will bring into focus the importance of compromising and accepting difference for a common goal. As last year, we encourage you to stand united in a world where so many cultures manifest themselves, a world that continuously creates and nurtures new ideas, new systems of values.
We strongly feel that there is Unity in Diversity and that we have the power to lend a helping hand, to reach out, because so much is at stake if we choose to do nothing. The 9th edition of Bucharest Student Model United Nations Conference is created around this idea and it wishes to inspire everybody, from delegates to Chairpersons or organizers, to make the first step towards peace and compromise.
The message we would like to send is that compromising is not a sign of weakness, but of strength. It requires maturity, strong will and a wide perspective. It requires us to see the big picture and plan ahead. And that is exactly what we are searching for this year: delegates who want to make a change, delegates who are ready to compromise and do everything they can to ease the burden our world is carrying, for the greater good.
