Manolis Antonakakis

Secretary General

Manolis Antonakakis is currently studying at the Department of Law of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His academic interests include International and European Law, Human Rights and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Thus, he has participated in a series of such-related competitions, courses and conferences. He discovered his passion for simulations back in 2016 and, since then, he has participated in numerous simulations of UΝ committees, EU institutions and other regional organizations’ bodies, not only as Delegate, but also as Chairperson and Member of the Secretariat. He speaks four languages and he is currently focused on getting his degree and activism.

Dear future delegates and friends of BISMUN,

My name is Manolis Antonakakis and this year I will have the honor of serving as the Secretary General of Bucharest International Student Model United Nations (BISMUN) 2020. This conference holds a special place to my heart and I am honestly wholeheartedly motivated to work hard in order to make this year’s edition a special one.

What makes BISMUN 2020 already exceptional is its topic which revolves around one of the greatest challenges that Homo sapiens has ever faced, namely climate change. As the former Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban-Ki Moon, once said, “there is no Plan B, because there is no Planet B”. Thus, we, the younger generation, as we have no other sustainable option left, we still hold the power to raise our voice, bring proposals to the table and hammer out the so-wanted “Plan A” to fight the ongoing climate and ecological crisis.

I am deeply convinced that an academic simulation like BISMUN has the ability to contribute towards this direction, since it can offer us the ability to get familiar with the procedures according to which decisions with global impact are taken in real time. A delegate has the opportunity to exercise their diplomatic skills, to learn how to be an active listener and an inspiring orator and, most importantly, how to reach a commonly accepted middle way in the context of a multistakeholder environment. After all, the ultimate aim of an academic simulation is to support the youth in becoming the decision makers of tomorrow. And, believe me, these are us!

So, dear friends, I would like to invite you all to step out of your comfort zone and apply for the 12th edition of BISMUN. Join us from the 25th to the 30th of March in Bucharest, where you will have the chance to get in the shoes of a diplomat and get introduced to a whole new world full of motions, points and Draft Resolutions. Perceive this chance not as a competition, but as a way to improve yourselves, personally and academically, and meet new people who share the same concerns with you.

Me and the other Members of the Secretariat, Yiorgos Pastelis and Antonia Christopoulou, will give our best to make sure that the academic level of the conference will remain at its very high level and that you will enjoy every minute of the process.

On behalf of the entire BISMUN 2020 team, I look forward to giving you all a warm welcome at this year’s edition of the conference. For any additional inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours Sincerely,

Manolis Antonakakis
Secretary General of Bucharest International Student Model United Nations 2020
